Welcome to my blog!
My name is Jeffrey Neal and I am an Orange County Photographer!

This is where you can see all that I am doing in the world of photography!  On my blog you will find the latest images from all the shoots that I have, information for my clients and any other crazy ideas or projects that I have.
Some Q and A for why and how I do what I do and what I use to do it.

Do you use Mac or PC?

Not that I am super opinionated about this subject, but I do use a Mac Pro for my work flow.  I do not think that a computer will make you a better photographer, it just so happens that it fits me and my business best to use a Mac.  I have been an apple guy for about 6 years, after my wife got me to switch and have just fell in love.  I do have to say though in that six years I have not had one computer fail on me and for that I am very thankful.

What do you shoot with?

My camera of choice is Canon!  Right now I currently shoot the 1Ds markIII, 5D, 1D markIIn for my digital work.  I also shoot a Leica M6 and Canon 1V for film, and on a rare occasion my Zone 6 4x5 camera.  I did have the 5D mark II for a short while and was not that happy with it so I had to get rid of it.  I just think I am in love with the 1 series camera's so why change.  Although the 5D is still one of my favorite cameras for many reasons.  I still think that no matter what camera you shoot with it is not the camera what makes you a great photographer or even a good one.  At almost all the weddings you go to now at least two or three of the guests have a 5D or 1 series camera and they are not professionals.  Just got to love the digital age, it has made photography so much more valued and revived the industry.

What program do you use to edit your images?

Like I said I am an apple guy so my software of choice is Aperture!  I love Aperture so much.  It is an all in one program that does everything I need it to.  So I do all of my color corrections in Aperture and then use Photoshop to do my final edits and design albums.  I was not a huge fan of Lightroom only because it could not do everything I wanted.  Pretty much Aperture is the most powerful and easy to use software.

What is your favorite lens?

I have to say that my favorite lens is the 50mm 1.2L.  Besides the fact that the lens is super sharp, I just love the look of 50mm.  A second to that lens is the 24 1.4L.  I am typically a wide shooter so the 24 gives me all the room I love in the frame.

Who do you use for your albums?

I absolutely love Leathercraftsmen!  Just because they have been around a long time does not mean that they are outdated.  LC makes some of the most high end albums in the industry and also allows you to use any cover treatment you would like.  I think what does it for me is the quality of the albums and the amazing customer service.  I would love to be able to make my own albums like JMC but until then I will have LC do it.

Who do you use for your prints?

This is a no-brainer.  Fotoworks, which is located about ten minutes down the street is one of the best labs in the entire world.  I love that they use fuji paper and Katie makes sure that you are taken care of no matter what the cost.  I have all my prints sent to me so I can make sure all is well and then I put them in nice boxes that have my logo on them and send them to my clients.  I think it is so important to reinforce your brand every chance you can.

Are workshops necessary?

I am very opinionated on this.  It is in my business plan to attend a least one workshop a year that is related to making images or learning about photography.  I think that it is so important that we never forget how important it is to grow and challenge ourselves in our work.  It may even mean taking a workshop about photography in a different industry but still you are learning more about your craft.  I would do some research on different workshops and make yourself attend them every year.  The moment that we think we have nothing to learn we have stopped growing, when we stop growing we become irrelevant and lose our passion to do what brought us so much joy.

Do you shoot RAW or JPG?

Can you tell the difference?  It is more than likely a hard drive issue.  Yes, I do shoot RAW!

Do you still shoot film?

I love film, and I hope it shows in all my branding.  I took my first photography class in 7th grade where we got to develop our own negatives and print our own images.  It was magic to me when I got to watch, what was only a concept in my mind, appear on a piece of paper.  I loved rocking the solution back and forth until I could see my image come to life.  It was this that got me into photography and to this day is still my favorite part.  I love that thoughts and ideas in our minds can come to life on print.  So, that was a really long way to say yes I still shoot film.  I no longer do all my processing but love getting my film in the mail to go through and see what happened.  As far as weddings go I am offering a film only album right now and plan in the future to offer a film only package.

Do you wear all black to weddings?

All black is not my personality.  I love to wear clothes that I would normally wear if I was going out.  I like to express myself and have what I wear match my brand and my personality.  I dress very nice and look professional but just not in all black.  I would if the clients requested, but not normally.
